Be the change that nature wants to see

Sagarmitra

The idea of Sagar-Mitra came in 2011 – when enthusiastic school children were not permitted to go for a cleanup drive because of the safety issues in a nullah nearly. There was biomedical waste, stray dogs, foul smell and cows around that area.

It was unsafe for the students to be at such a place and hence they were called back to their classrooms.

Students were disappointed. But they showed a lot of energy in really really doing something for this bad situation.

In the conversation, a simple action point emerged – How about cleaning our oceans and rivers from our homes?

Students took it on them to collect plastic at home every month and send it for recycling.

A simple action program slowly found its relevance and slowly turned into a people’s movement

Starting with 150 students to now more than 375000 school children participating in the daily action to save the oceans.

Sagar-Mitra, might seem like a plastic recollection initiative but it isn’t. Sagarmitra empowers school children to take a personal action to solve a global problem of ocean plastics.

Sagar-Mitra has reached over 6 cities and more than 4,00,000 volunteers who are being a voice for countless birds, animals, fish etc. dying form our ignorance of throwing plastic every single day.

How many people will have to change in order to save the ocean?

Our children answer – every hand which throw plastic. 8 Billion.

What we do

Every 10 kgs of clean & dry plastic we collect will help save 1 sq km of ocean life. We have seen that there are ~50,000 planktons (ocean trees) in a single drop of ocean water. How many such drops will be saved under 1 sq km of the ocean?

This program is formulated over 36 years of research at Vishwasanskruti Ashram, validated for 14 years with 375,000 children. It draws it’s strength from a philosophical base originating from our ancient religious scriptures & learnings, while keeping a scientific outlook in mind.
